Technical, or ABAP, consultants write custom code to extend SAP beyond its standard functionality, when a business genuinely needs something the built-in tools can't do. Most SAP professionals, and most SAP job postings, are functional roles — the technical track is a smaller, separate specialization.

If not coding, what does help someone succeed in a functional SAP role?

Relevant business knowledge matters far more — accounting background for FICO, procurement or supply chain experience for MM, sales experience for SD. Attention to detail and logical thinking help too, but these are general professional skills, not programming-specific ones. Many successful SAP consultants come from accounting, supply chain, sales, or general operations backgrounds with zero prior IT experience — structured training is what typically bridges the gap, not a computer science degree.
